As a young engineer I started my professional career at a leading consulting engineering firm specialized in wastewater treatment. I was very grateful to my boss who arranged an intensive on-the-job training in a large American chemical industry with various production plants on site in the Antwerp port area. I learned a lot from their excellent process and engineering standards and proven practices and was lucky to participate in several challenging projects including different wastewater treatment pilot plants. Quickly I got fascinated by these pilot plants and wondered: “How can we do this better?”. This resulted in modelling the physical, chemical and biological processes along with their key equipment and process controls. In the next step, we tried to improve the conversion processes with their controls as to boost their performance. Over many years this resulted a.o. in our proven high-rate AD+™ and AS+™ biotechnology with full scale plants converting wastewater and slurries up to 99% to green energy and blue water. Our complementing process technologies with their digital twins are essential in a multi-barrier approach to eliminate a broad range of “hard” recalcitrant organic compounds incl. micropollutants such as residual medicines and endocrine disruptors from our drinking water and natural environment.
